The tip of India at Kannyakumari

The Gandhi Memorial is what drew our interest. This shrine is where Mahatma Gandhi’s ashes were kept before immersion in the ninth sacred river of India i.e. the confluence of the oceans. The building is designed so that every year on Gandhiji’s birthday – 2nd October – at midday, the rays of the sun fall on the exact spot where his ashes had rested. This shrine was hit by the waves and the workmen were rebuilding on the sea side of the building. The custodian greeted us and I explained what I was doing and he very kindly allowed me to photograph inside. It has rather strange architecture which I think was meant to look like a modern temple, but it is clean and fresh and spacious inside.

As always with Gandhiji I was moved by all that he achieved and all that he stood for. There was no-one else there so Graham and I enjoyed ourselves in silence looking at everything; there is an inscription on the bronze depiction of him writing which says:
